More jobs, not more taxes
Taxpayers and families are struggling to make ends meet, and trimming their budgets to stay afloat. It is incumbent upon state government to do the same to bring relief to working families in our state. The Democrats’ current budget proposal calls for a record $1.8 billion in new taxes, and the Governor has offered a compromise proposal that calls for an additional $391 million in increased revenues. You simply can not convince me at this point that there is no more room to streamline government and reduce spending. The budgets currently on the table send us down precisely the wrong path.
My House Republican colleagues and I believe that, whereas your family has had to cut back on spending and make sacrifices in these trying economic times, so too state government must do the same. Recently, we unveiled a Real-World, No Tax Increase budget, which closes the current $8 billion budget deficit, without hurting Connecticut’s working families.
Our budget reflects the reality that Connecticut families have cut corners and decreased spending to make ends meet. Our Real-World, No Tax Increase budget doesn’t raise your taxes, yet continues to take care of our neediest residents, by returning spending on government programs to 2007 funding levels. It’s worth noting that in 2007, we were still the national leader in government assistance for our most vulnerable citizens. This budget plan will ensure our state continues its strong tradition of taking care of our less fortunate residents, without raising taxes on those who have worked hard to become successful.
Other highlights of the Real-World, No Tax Increase budget include:
- Reduces state spending by 4%
- Maintains current state aid to municipalities
- Consolidates 23 state agencies into 6
- Less borrowing than the other alternatives
- Maintains funding for social and human services
