State Rep. Tim LeGeyt pushing legislation to protect residential heating oil and propane consumers

State Rep. Tim LeGeyt (R-Canton) is advocating proposed legislation (H.B. 6470), “An Act Concerning Residential Heating Oil and Propane Contracts.” The bill would require written contracts for consumers, as well as disclosure of unit prices per gallon on bills. The proposed legislation would also regulate retailers’ ability to assess delivery charges.

“The propane industry has been the focus of concern recently with regard to a number of issues, not the least of which is the practice by propane suppliers to encourage customers to enter into multi-year contracts for propane tank rental thereby holding them captive to uncommon rate increases,” said Rep. LeGeyt.

”I have introduced a bill to limit the length of tank rental contracts, and that bill has been included in a related form by the Attorney General as a package of legislation - H.B. 6470 - to regulate the sale of heating oil and propane gas.  It is essential that the consumer be protected from the advantages that propane suppliers hold when providing basic heating necessities to Connecticut customers.”

The bill has already been the subject of public hearing and is currently awaiting action by the legislature’s General Law Committee.

One Response to “State Rep. Tim LeGeyt pushing legislation to protect residential heating oil and propane consumers”

Robert Townley Said:

I live in Andover CT and get robbed by Uncas Gas. They just charged me 3.10 per gallon which seems to be robbery. When I purchased the home, the previous owner was paying at least $2.00 more than market and I had to pay for the tank at closing. When I called they told me the previous owner had rate increases over time. I asked if they ever went down and the basic answer was that when price goes over what the highest price you have paid to date, the new higher price is now your new price unless you call. So this is how CT propane companies treat loyal customers. Something needs to be done! We are hostages!

Thank you for supporting us.
